Replacement of DEP Wireless Network (Wi-Fi) - migration to NJOIT wireless
Description
Replace the Wireless Access Points or migrate to NJOIT’s Wireless as a Service (WaaS). Currents WAPS are EOL in FY25. This need was listed in the FY24-31 capital budget requests. Estimated replacement cost was estimated at $400K. NJOIT WaaS is billed via CAR at a rate of $25/month per WAP. DEP would need ~200 WAPs.
Problem Statement
To ensure reliable wireless network service to DEP staff, the Wireless Access Points need to be replaced on a regular schedule. The current wireless controllers (for the wireless access points) will become end-of life (EOL) in CY2025. In addition, NJOIT is mandating agencies to standardize on Cisco products for wireless and wired networking equipment. NJOIT is interested in having DEP migrate to their WaaS (Wireless as a Service). The cost, published in the rate sheet for FY24 is $25/month per WAP. DEP maintains approximately 150 wireless access points and an additional 50 may be required to provide coverage for existing dead-spots, the increased usage of wireless devices (i.e. laptops) and the demands for faster speed.
Project Justification
Wireless network and internet service for staff and guests is an expected and critical service.
