NJ Statewide Water Supply Plan

Description

The final deliverable will be an ESRI ArcGIS Online Web Experience, available to any NJ resident and housed on the Water Supply Plan Website. The project will include the selection of key water supply topics to be included, each of which will be summarized based on related contents from the Plan. Not all topics dealt with in the Plan will become components of the product. Resulting text summaries will be organized in separate sections on an ArcGIS Web Experience. Some maps and graphics from the Plan will be
selected to illustrate the issues, and in some cases additional ones will be generated. Alignment with other DEP priorities and publications is important for both the Plan and the Web Experience, so links will be included where appropriate and some existing DEP tools may even be embedded if permitted. Once complete, the product will be made available to NJ residents on the water supply plan website. To inform the public of its availability, an email will be sent to a previously established group of stakeholders.
Additionally, the Web Experience will be presented to the WSAC and DEP’s social media presence will be incorporated appropriately. As DEP works on the action items included in the Plan, updates and additions will be made to the Web Experience to engage the public with ongoing water supply efforts.

Problem Statement

A primary goal for the update of the NJ Statewide Water Supply Plan (NJSWSP or Plan) is to communicate critical water supply information with the public in an easily consumable way. With the updated Plan drafted, NJGWS will select specific issues that are new to this version or most relevant to public interests to create a product to enhance engagement with residents of NJ. The issues will be presented in an organized, visually forward and at least partially interactive fashion. ESRI’s Web Experience format will be used to facilitate navigation, allow for the inclusion of images and maps, and support the required customization. The NJSWSP is to be updated every five years, but this product will allow DEP to present progress on goals set forth in the 2024 Plan. This product should be released within several months after the NJSWSP update is finalized.

Project Justification

It is a requirement of New Jersey’s water supply planning process to hold public meetings to allow residents opportunities to provide feedback on draft Plans prior to finalization. During the 2024 update, extra efforts were made to engage stakeholders beyond those that work in the water supply field. The Web Experience will increase public access to the most pressing issues the state faces, and share progress made by DEP to secure current and future supply.
