Nobody can do the same by hand.\n\nSteps exist in both products; the behaviour is the same in Jira and Confluence.\n\nChange\n\n-\nNew \"Remove step\" action on a step of the approval panel and the approval details, for in-progress approvals. It asks for a required comment and shows what happens next (\"The approval continues with \").\n\n-\nWho: the user who started the approval, when the reassign rules let them act (Start approval permission when the app's permissions are on, JSM agents with access, never JSM customers), and global admins, like the AI prompt step rerun (PromptStepRerunService.canRerun). Off unless the new global setting \"Enable step removal\" (General settings, Step updates) is on (decision 3).\n\n-\nWhich steps (decision 1): user, group, email, vote and AI prompt steps that are waiting or in progress, including blocked group steps (AP-2495); automation, webhook and Notification steps while waiting (they finish as soon as they start); work item field steps that resolve when they start, while waiting. Not decided or skipped steps, not the start, not success, rejection or expiration steps. Not on archived, outdated or deadline-passed approvals. A running AI prompt step can be removed; its result, when it arrives, is ignored.\n\n-\nThe removal is refused when no other open step that needs a decision (user, group, email, vote, AI prompt) would remain, so removing never completes the approval by itself (decision 2). The message says to reject or delete the approval instead.\n\n-\nAfter the removal the approval continues the way AP-2449 does after a cleared field:\n\n-\na new approval version is recorded; the version selector still shows the step in the earlier version, and parallel group names stay as they were (ParallelGroupNames);\n\n-\nparallel groups are recomputed: custom approval and rejection counts are lowered to the remaining steps, and a group whose counts are met ends, skipping its other open steps (ParallelGroupResolutionService);\n\n-\nif the removed step was the current one, the next steps start: approvers are called to act, and automation, webhook and AI prompt steps run (continueAfterStepsChange);\n\n-\nthe work item property, Approval field and workflow conditions in Jira, and the approval state in Confluence, are refreshed once, after the commit;\n\n-\nconcurrent changes are refused with \"Approval was modified concurrently\", as for a reassignment.\n\n-\nActivity records \"Step '' removed by \" with the comment. Votes already cast on a removed group or vote step stay visible there and in the earlier version.\n\n-\nNotifications: approvers asked to decide on the removed step (the step was in progress) get the existing \"Removed from step\" message (STEP_REASSIGN_REMOVED, \"This change was made by \"): the user, the email address, the moderator and voters who have not voted, and group members who have not voted. A waiting step notifies nobody. Slack and Teams messages of the removed step say \"Step removed\", not \"reassigned\".\n\n-\nRovo: the step is gone from the remaining path; the removal appears in the approval's history, and the path change reasons say the starter or an admin can remove a step. Rovo cannot remove steps (decision 4).\n\nDecisions needed\n\n-\nCan an in-progress step with votes (group or vote step) be removed? Recommended: yes; it is the main use (a blocked or stalled group), and the votes stay in Activity and in the earlier version.\n\n-\nWhat may be left after a removal? a) At least one other open step that needs a decision, so a removal never completes the approval. b) AP-2449's rule: any other step, decided and automatic ones included, so removing the last open step can complete the approval as approved. Recommended: a). With b) the starter can approve their own request by removing its approvers.\n\n-\nGate: a global setting, off by default, like reassignment? Also a per-step \"Can be removed\" option on the definition? Recommended: the global setting only, first.\n\n-\nChannels: UI only first; Web API v2 and Rovo only show the result? Recommended: yes.\n\n-\nSteps that exclude the approval creator (group steps) and steps marked \"Required\" in a parallel group: may the starter remove them? Recommended: only global admins. Otherwise a removal undoes what the definition asked for to stop self-approval.\n\nOut of scope\n\n-\nAdding steps to, or reordering steps of, a running approval; undoing a removal.\n\n-\nEvery new approval version gives all steps new ids, so Slack and Teams buttons of the other open steps stop working (the known AP-2449 issue); carrying chat messages over to the new step ids is its own ticket.\n\n-\nRemoving steps through Web API v2 or Rovo, unless decision 4 says otherwise.\n\nAcceptance criteria\n\n-\nSetting off: no \"Remove step\" action; the server refuses the request.\n\n-\nThe starter removes the current user step with a comment; a new version is recorded, the next approver is called to act, the removed approver gets \"Removed from step\", and Activity shows the removal and the comment.\n\n-\nA waiting step is removed: nobody is notified, and the approval continues when it reaches the next step.\n\n-\nRemoving the only open approver step is refused with a message (decision 2).\n\n-\nA blocked group step (AP-2495) is removed and the approval continues; its votes stay in Activity.\n\n-\nParallel group with custom counts (2 of 3, one approved): removing one open step leaves 2 of 2; removing a step so the group's counts are met ends the group and starts the next step.\n\n-\nRemoving the current step when a webhook step follows: the webhook runs. Removing a running AI prompt step: its late result changes nothing.\n\n-\nAnother user, a JSM customer, or a user without Start approval permission (app permissions on) is refused; a global admin is allowed.\n\n-\nArchived, outdated or deadline-passed approvals: no action, refused by the server.\n\n-\nTwo users remove steps at the same time: one succeeds, the other gets \"modified concurrently\".\n\n-\nIn Jira the work item property, Approval field and workflow conditions match the new current step.\n\n-\nRovo describes the new remaining path and the removal.\n\nManual tester notes\n\n-\nTurn on \"Enable step removal\" in General settings, Step updates. Use an approval with user, group, email, vote, webhook and AI prompt steps, and one with a parallel group with custom counts.\n\n-\nAfter each removal, check the version selector (earlier version shows the step), Activity, the next approver's notification and the removed approver's \"Removed from step\" message, by email and in Slack and Teams.\n\n-\nIn Jira, check the Approval field, JQL and a workflow condition on the work item; ask Rovo \"what is this approval waiting for?\".\n\n-\nRepeat the current step, waiting step and parallel group cases in Confluence.⟦/80896805⟧","origin":"issue description"},"fields":[{"id":"priority","name":{"untrusted":"⟦80896805⟧Priority⟦/80896805⟧","origin":"field name set by a Jira admin"},"value":{"untrusted":"⟦80896805⟧Priority: LowestLowest⟦/80896805⟧","origin":"field value"}},{"id":"assignee","name":{"untrusted":"⟦80896805⟧Assignee⟦/80896805⟧","origin":"field name set by a Jira admin"},"value":{"untrusted":"⟦80896805⟧Michał Błaszczykowski⟦/80896805⟧","origin":"field value"}},{"id":"reporter","name":{"untrusted":"⟦80896805⟧Reporter⟦/80896805⟧","origin":"field name set by a Jira admin"},"value":{"untrusted":"⟦80896805⟧Michał Błaszczykowski⟦/80896805⟧","origin":"field value"}},{"id":"labels","name":{"untrusted":"⟦80896805⟧Labels⟦/80896805⟧","origin":"field name set by a Jira admin"},"value":{"untrusted":"⟦80896805⟧docs_update_requiredrelease_notes_worthyroadmap⟦/80896805⟧","origin":"field value"}}],"attachments":[],"comments":{"total":0,"items":[]}}},"actions":[],"unavailableActions":[],"reminder":"End of data.
