3D Coastal Plain Aquifer Explorer Application
Description
-A proof of concept has been developed for Ocean County to confirm the software and approach will work.
-NJGWS geologists and hydrogeologists are able to support the development of the : 3D Aquifer GIS tool .
-NJGWS is able to commit adequate staff resources for all phases of project development and testing as
requested by DOIT.
-NJGWS shall make available to DOIT a subject matter expert team to answer questions and develop required documentation and web content as necessary during the entire project process.
- If NJGWS finds issues with the system after acceptance testing, NJGWS will work with DOIT to resolve them
Problem Statement
Various other states have done some variation of a 2D Aquifer application. We believe with our approach and data we'll have a high-quality 3D digital application that will be the next generation of aquifer information from NJGWS and DEP.
Project Justification
NJ coastal plain aquifer stratigraphy has been refined over time and there have been multiple historic efforts to develop tools that allow users to determine depth to aquifers and confining units. However, the existing tools are either geologically outdated or no longer operable on today’s computers. Utilizing the most recent NJGWS developed aquifer and geologic mapping and USGS groundwater model data, a digital 3D aquifer model is being proposed. The primary goal of this 3D model is to be able to show NJ Coastal Plain aquifer units as well as selected geophysical well data.
With the ever-growing 3D visualization tools available in Arc Pro and other states implementing similar models, we believe that our 3D aquifer model will be a great internal (and later external) application that will provide accurate depth to aquifer units, as well as nearby geophysical data, anywhere in the NJ Coastal Plain province and will support permitting programs, geoscientists, well drillers, and others. Project goals include: 1) an interactive/exploratory tool that gives the user the ability to hover over the NJ coastal plain and navigate underneath the surface to investigate aquifer units, 2) NJGWS wells within the model will give deeper insight into depth of aquifers and provide well log information, and 3) a new way to visualize Gamma log information using Arc Pro Add-ins.
