State Park Campsite Geodatabase Review

Description

As a part of a larger project being carried out by TylerTech to rework NJSPF&HS’s existing camping reservation system as well as new retail and point of sale functionality, accurate campsite GIS locations were requested by TyleTech for use in this system. Campsite locations will be presented to the public in the reservation system on an ESRI based map.

Using the current New Jersey Outdoors camping webpage as a reference, a feature class composed of every campsite offered by the New Jersey State Parks was created. The sites were digitized using point data and were subsequently given site names based off the NJ Outdoors database. The geodatabase will be migrated to AGO with editing permissions granted to each park’s data collectors, whether that is the Superintendent or other park staff familiar with the campgrounds.

Data collection will involve park staff accessing digitized campsite data on Field Maps to verify or correct locations. Once all campsites are verified, the feature class will be exported back to the V: drive and attribute information provided by TylerTech will be joined to the geolocated points, giving each campsite details information about use, accessibility, size, etc. During this process, NJ State Parks will also develop a final schema.

Once data schema and contents are complete, NJ State Parks will request the data to be published internally and externally for TylerTech to use in their new campground reservation system. This will allow us to maintain campsite data.

Problem Statement

The campsite geodatabase has been built to the best ability using Nearmap 3-inch imagery data. A field in the feature class is populated with location accuracy, and, due to limitations of imagery (coniferous tree coverage, poor resolution), there is low confidence in many data points. Per the NJDEP GPS Data Collection Standards for GIS Data Development, GPS data must be within 5 meters of truth. Getting the data to this level of accuracy allows this database to be used by visitors to access their campsite as well as emergency personnel responding to time-sensitive calls.

Project Justification

As a part of a larger project involving TylerTechnology / Recreation Dynamics (TylerTech) that is updating the NJSPF&HS camping reservation, retail / Point of Sale and event reservation functionality, campsite data is being compiled into a single feature class. The data was digitized using aerial imagery and attributes were populated from the existing New Jersey Outdoors camping webpage.

To verify the data is accurately geolocated, the data will be migrated to an ArcGIS Online (AGO) feature service and shared via a temporary ArcGIS Online Group. From there, park superintendents or assigned staff would be able to open the feature service in Field Maps, verify campsite accuracy and make edits where necessary.

The AGO group and the data hosting will be temporary and will only be needed until all campsites are verified. Afterwards, the feature service will then be re-migrated locally where it can be used in the larger TylerTech project.
