Water Champions Story Map

Description

The goal of this project is to create a Story Map to inform the public about the Water Champions grant, recognize the schools and businesses that participated, and share the data we’ve collected. The Story Map must be published by the end of 2022, but we will likely update it with additional information, as schools and business continue to provide us with updated data. Ideally, we would not like to publish the locations and associated attributes; they would just be navigation points on the story map. Since it will be public-facing, it will need to be published on AGO rather than GeoHub. Staff are in the process of outlining the narrative, choosing photos, creating maps, and outline how we would like data presented. It would be useful for BGIS to provide us with a template to add this information to.

DELIVERABLE: Public facing Story Map with multiple tabs. It will include an introduction tab with text and photos, a map tab that allows users to zoom to each site and displays data/metrics on each location, and eventually a tab that links to our curriculum that we will store on our website. Shooting for a target draft by 9/28/22.

Problem Statement

The Water Champions Project is a grant that DWSG has through EPA that is designed to educate middle and high school students about water conservation and ways to increase their efficiency/conservation practices. The students are taught about water conservation in the classroom and then are tasked with performing water audits in their homes, school, local businesses. DEP then provides funding for schools and businesses to replace the identified old fixtures and replace them with energy and water efficient models.

WSGS is looking for BGIS to help make their Story Map. Such as setting up a template for WSGS to populate with data, text, and maps.

Project Justification

The grant period for this project is coming to a close, and as part of our promised deliverables to EPA, we must create a story map. This will highlight all schools and businesses that have participated, past and present, as well as their measurable results from the audits and retrofit work. The story map will be shared publicly on our water conservation website.

Story maps are a great way to create an interactive narrative about a project that’s easy to share with the public. Given that this project has a spatial component, this is a way to clearly illustrate spatial relationships, gives the narrative a stronger sense of place, and adds visual appeal and credibility to this project.
