Freshwater Ammonia Calculator
Description
This project will require a preliminary test between two software applications (Shinyapps.io and Tableau). Our goal is to determine the most suitable platform based on responsiveness and visual communication of the information. The objectives are to evaluate the connectivity of Tableau with R, compare the ease of developing the application in Tableau versus Shinyapps.io, and to compare the quality and useability of the application features. Making a choice as to which product is suited best for this project may not be possible without developing and testing the target application on both platforms.
Project Justification
This tool is needed to assist dischargers in successfully achieving compliance with new or updated water quality standards. It will be used to compare numeric criteria generated using the existing and proposed freshwater ammonia equations. These equations can be quite complex. Specifically, this tool will analyze pH, temperature, and ammonia water quality data collected from the State’s fresh surface waters (rivers, streams and lakes) and compare the ambient ammonia concentrations to the current and proposed freshwater ammonia SWQS. Inquiries made to the Bureau regarding ammonia criteria may be redirected to this application instead of having to be addressed by staff. This project aligns with the DEP’s objective of promoting transparency, efficiency, and innovation using technology.
