Beach Erosion Monitoring and Prediction Program
Description
DCE is aware of different technologies utilized to monitor and evaluate trends in sand transportation and erosion. These range from traditional land-based surveying and subsequent data analysis to remote sensing equipment utilizing a series of mounted cameras. DCE would like to evolve as an office in its predictive capabilities to better serve the public by anticipating the needs of a community prior to a storm occurring as opposed to being reactionary. By being proactive, DCE can obtain greater Federal dollars by quickly quantifying losses and associated costs as well as identify trends in the current beaches to allow our office to engage in meaningful conversations with USACE as to modifications to beach fill templates which would perform better based on the hard data obtained coupled with the predictive tools utilized. DCE would like to engage several options such as remote sensing equipment mounted to drones, upgrades to software and training of staff to analyze the data as well as the use of third party services to assist in the compilation and analysis of data to produce these trends. The options explored to data have ranged in the $100K area, so further exploration is warranted.
