Enhanced DEP Data Source and Systems Catalogue

Description

This project would consider the current catalogue in Heat, and choose some level of improvement up to a comprehensive approach of full asset management spanning all local, cloud and third party hosted data sources, content, uses, their interfaces and systems, owners, uptime requirements, plans and responsibilities for maintenance, and costs and licenses. This demands much engagement with and effort by programs who own data. DOIT might focus on how the effort can manage and limit liabilities and costs while a partnership with DEP's Environmental Health and its Science and Research groups might manage and prioritize the informational, analytical, intelligence and insight-building opportunities.

It is worth noting that the current list comes from legal considerations supporting PFAS litigation. It may be that DEP was required to disclose its data sources as part of discovery. This project would enhance such capability, but would be driven by and designed to meet other demands.

Project Justification

An incomplete and not readily available catalogue limits opportunities for wider access to and exploration of data, combining or cross-referencing sources, and unlocking new insights. Some data is only known to and accessible by a single unit or person. Inactive or historic sets may be at risk of being lost as data owners retire.
