New Jersey’s Air Quality Trends and Progress
Description
The project aims to create a public-facing story map detailing trends in New Jersey’s air quality with regards to criteria pollutants, volatile organic compounds, Nitrogen Oxides, and emissions inventories. It will involve interactive line graphs, pie charts, and bar graphs. It aims to reinforce for the public the progress New Jersey has made in air quality in an intuitive, user-friendly way.
Problem Statement
NJDEP’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) has implemented significant rules,
regulations, programs and policies to protect public health and improve
levels of criteria pollutants. While this information can be found in various
documents posted on the programs within DAQ, the documents are
technical in nature and not compiled in a manner that would easily inform
the public. The project is a story map detailing New Jersey’s history and
successes in air quality improvement. While the data exists, it is important
to create engaging and digestible ways to tell the story of NJ National
Ambient Air Quality Standards to the public. It will also provide the public
with a realistic understanding of the current state of NJ air quality and a
better understanding of where further improvement is needed for the
future. Project completion is measurable based on when the story map is
published online, and it is achievable based on an example published by
Washington D.C.

Project Justification
The success of the Washington D.C. story map supports the project.
Additionally, this information currently exists, and promoting NJDEP’s
regulatory and planning efforts in a positive manner will be good for public
outreach.
