Mapping DEP Habitat Activities
Description
NJSPF&HS and NJF&W are seeking transparency with projects occurring on state lands. This project will focus on delivering interactive web map displaying the active and completed projects as points within a park, forest, recreation area, historic site or wildlife management area. Points will be clickable and have information such as project name, brief project description, lead agency, acreage, time frame, status, required permits and hyperlink to page with additional information (if available) in a pop-up. Project types may include forestry management, trail work, invasive plant removal or habitat work. Map will also contain state open space boundaries to show expanse of open space areas
Problem Statement
The Commissioner’s Office of the Department of Environmental Protection is interested in becoming more publicly engaged with activities taking place on state lands. They aim to create a public-facing map that showcases land management and stewardship projects, providing summarized information about each project.
Project Justification
Many agencies have interactive maps of their preserves. For example, Nature Conservancy has a map of “Explore your Local Nature Preserves” with points on the map that display information like a summary of the area, hours, and directions. NJ Conservation Foundation has a page containing “Project Areas” – while there is no interactive map component, they list out areas with active projects and accompanying PDF project area maps.
Internally, we have the Land Management Review Screening Tool. This tool includes an interactive map of projects occurring on state lands which is part of the submittal process for F&W and NJSPF&HS internal review of proposed projects. The idea is that the internal data can be modified for public consumption in this proposed interactive map.

Estimated Transactions
Currently there are 27 projects with 110 total sites. The tracking will expand, but not exponentially.
